In this beautifully written prequel to the Prime Suspect stories which later became the wonderful PBS series starring Helen Mirren (who receives a dedication from LaPlante at the forefront of the book),in the superb character Jane Tennison, here a 22-year-old WPC, there are distinct similarities with the young Constable (later Inspector) Morse, now featured in the enjoyable PBS series Endeavor (buy the dvd's if you haven't seen it). Young WPC Tennison is not afraid of blurting out her ideas about an investigation to her superiors, who are usually surprised at her cheek and grateful for the insightful pointers. Many of her police colleagues are terrific, exciting characters, and there is a bittersweet romance that you can tell will go far in forming the cynical older Jane and her decision to become an inspector. Never boring, this book takes you inside day to day life at a London police station in the early 1970s, includes segments on Jane's home life with family, her decision to move to police lodging, and a side story about a planned bank heist by a family of criminals becomes a very important part of the book's finale. Turns out she is popular in the UK for writing several TV series which arrived here as BBC, PBS
Masterpiece and Mystery programs. One mini-series is called "Prime Suspect - Tennison".
Is it the same Tennison? Yes and no. It's the same character but at a very different stage of life.
Lynda LaPlante has revealed the story backwards because her TV career demanded a substantial,
believable heroine, a mature professional detective . She wrote Prime Suspect shows and turned them
into three novels. When fans wanted to know more about her detective, Jane Tennison, she wrote four
more novels to cover her coming-of-age from college till Prime Suspect stage.
I'm reading in age sequence, starting with "Tennison" (Book 1). Jane is 24 years old, has graduated
from the academy and works an entry-level job at the police station. The department has two women -
Jane and a young detective trainee. The males play them 24 X 7, criticizing, joking, insulting, asking
them to take orders and deliver lunch. The Brass finds surprisingly substantial work for them to do.
Jane attends her first autopsy, goes on surveilance and writes official reports. She sees a future
in law enforcement and becomes totally dedicated to working toward it. Jane's clueless family views
her co-workers as prospective husbands and tells her to invite them for for Sunday lunch. She suffers
the stupidity until the plot thickens and begins to focus on a heist. The book is filled with humor
but there is a surprise ending that will wipe the smile from your face.
This is the back story of how Jane Tennison started, and I have to admit, as a fan of the series on tv, I was worried that it would disappoint. NO! It's great, although I admit, I mentally see the young Jane as Helen Mirren was in her younger days. I really appreciate seeing the struggle the policewomen had in the 70's trying to break into the detective squad and especially homicide. For many younger women, this story might come as a surprise to know that it's so recently we've gotten the opportunities. The story itself was quite interesting, and following the investigation was easy as the author gives you all the information (I hate when fictional detectives suddenly solve a crime with info the author didn't give you!). I liked it so much that I hated it to end, but that's okay, I got the next book in the series!

It is 1973 and Jane Tennison is a probationer, a recent grad of the Metropolitan Police Training Academy. She is placed in Hackney (an area of London) where a Dickens’ novel ‘seems to come to life’. Rife with racism, sexism, crime, vice, cruelty, grittiness, male-domination and manipulation, Jane struggles to keep her head above water in this atmosphere.
Her character’s personality is hard to pin down as she is (or seems) so young, so inexperienced, so vulnerable. Yet there is an inner toughness, stubbornness, confidence and resolve. She is also uncannily intuitive and intelligent.
TENNISON is a very dramatic British police procedural. The plot is exceptional and the characters very well-developed. The ‘sense of place’ is also very strong.
TENNISON offers a very interesting perspective of the early 1970s. There is constant change, constant societal and cultural disruption. I admire an author tackling this time period.
TENNISON is painful to read at times. Jane is so manipulated; so looked down upon by her male ‘superiors’. I had to take several reading ‘breaks’ and calm down.
TENNISON, the book, made it easier to accept and admire the TV production of this title. I was unsettled by the TV production and didn’t know why, as I am a huge fan of Lynda LaPlante and her Prime Suspect production. I concluded that the character of Jane Tennison is so complex, especially as a young probationer, that the new series couldn’t develop Jane’s character (in 1 show) to the point where we can see an older, more mature Jane, played (flawlessly) by Helen Mirren.
I would heartily recommend this book and subsequent series.
